Olympus challenges photokina visitors to put their cameras to the test

OM-D vs. SLR
Giant puppet turns supermodel for low-light shoot-off

Iconic. Intuitive. Captivating in low light. Full of surprises and instantly rewarding, for professionals and beginners alike. The traditional strengths of Olympus cameras have inspired an outstanding programme at next month’s photokina, starting with the ultimate shoot-off. Olympus has such confidence in its products that it will be challenging visitors to directly compare their own digital SLRs against a mirrorless Olympus OM-D. And what better test subject than another contemporary icon that invariably turns it on in low light – the 5-metre-tall, glow-in-the-dark puppet DUNDU. This larger-than-life star will be wowing the crowds – and posing for photographs – in Cologne city centre from dusk onwards on September 18 and during the following day.

The OM-D challenge gets serious at the Olympus booth, where a pro photographer will be showing all comers just what the mirrorless flagship can do. Of course, visitors will have every opportunity to try out the rest of the Olympus camera range as well as special features like Live Bulb in the Blackbox. Other booth highlights include professional video making in the Audio Lounge and a Hello Terminal where you can have your picture taken against a backdrop.

This year’s photokina runs from September 18 – 23. The Olympus booth is in Hall 2.2, at Stand A11 – B10.

How do you do, DUNDU?
Nothing expresses the beauty and enchantment of sophisticated low-light visuals like the giant, interactive puppet DUNDU.

At five metres tall, this one-of-a-kind figure gives visitors of all ages an evening they will never forget. Operated by five professional puppeteers, DUNDU is elegant despite its size and moves with considerable grace as it mingles with the crowds that inevitably gather wherever it appears. Audience participation can be a surprisingly lifelike and even tender experience – for onlookers as well as everyone lucky enough to interact with the puppet directly. Its huge, essentially hollow body is comprised of a fine lattice that glows in the dark to give it a beautifully ethereal quality. For anyone with a camera, a picture or video of DUNDU is a must – and an excellent test of their camera’s low light capabilities. Which explains this year’s collaboration with Olympus.

DUNDU will be appearing on the square in front of Cologne cathedral on the evening of September 18 and at various locations around the city the next day as Olympus’ private supermodel, in the truest sense of the word.

Test against the best

Back at the Olympus booth, visitors will again have a chance to put their camera’s picture quality to the test – this time under more controlled conditions – by pitting their own D-SLR against an OM-D in the hands of a professional photographer. A model will pose for pictures taken by the public and the resident professional. A0-sized prints (equivalent to one square metre) will show just how well the OM-D measures up.

Video needs sound

Another highlight at this year’s booth is the Olympus Audio Lounge where you can sit back and enjoy professional-standard music videos created with a combination of an OM-D, an Olympus LS Digital Recorder and MAGIX Video deluxe 2013 Plus software. A making-of film will illustrate just how easily this can be done.

Blackbox beauty

In the Blackbox, visitors to the booth can watch light art develop in real time using one of Olympus’ most popular features, Live Bulb, which lets you follow the long-exposure light painting process on the camera display.
