Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) Environmental Photographer of the Year competition encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, resonant, challenging, original and beautiful, but most of all, pictures that will inspire people around the world to start taking care of our environment.

The Environmental Photographer of the Year (EPOTY) competition is open to all professional and amateur, national and international photographers of all ages. All photographs entered must have been completed since 01 January 2017.

CIWEM’s Environmental Photographer of the Year aims to promote and reward excellence in international environmental photography, and to enhance the understanding of the causes, consequences of and solutions to climate change and social inequality.

Categories:

Environmental Photographer of the Year
Celebrating powerful story telling, the Environmental Photographer of the Year is awarded to a single image which triggers debate, inspires action and improves understanding of the causes, impacts and solutions to environmental change and social inequality.

Changing Climates Prize
Chronicling environmental change and the resilience of the individuals and communities facing adversity including extreme weather events, environmental destruction, energy security and conservation of our natural resources.

Built Environment Prize
Focusing on people and our urban environments including environmental solutions from design, materials and structures, smart and resilient cities, transport, waste and the connections between nature, society and infrastructure in our urban environments.

Sustainability in Practice Prize
Revealing human connection to the natural world, this category explores sustainable environmental and economic development, the natural and social value of the environment, the circular economy and innovative adaption and mitigation approaches to environmental change.

Young Environmental Photographer of the Year (YEPOTY)
This category showcases the best in environmental photography through the lens of young photographers aged 20 or under, inspiring people around the world to protect and conserve our natural environment.

•Environmental Photographer of the Year – £2,000 cash prize and personalised certificate
•Changing Climates Prize – £500 cash prize and personalised certificate

Environmental Photographer of the Year 2018 competition is sponsored by Olympus UK.

The judges are looking in particular for pictures that show the dynamic link between environmental and social issues in a way that makes us think differently about the world around us. Judging criteria:

Impact – does it illustrate immediate, subtle or resonant messages?
Creativity – is it unusual, thoughtful, beautiful, subversive or ironic?
Originality – is the subject treated differently and is the subject matter new?
Composition – consider the perspective, balance, clarity of meaning and focus of statement
Relevance – consider current environmental issues
Technical quality – consider clarity, focus, lighting, exposure and colour

Entry deadline: 31st July 2018
All winners will be informed by 24th August 2018 by email.

You are permitted to enter up to 10 photographs. You must complete the entry form for each image submitted. During the submission process you will be asked to provide a short statement about your submitted image(s).

All entrants are asked to ensure they have read all Rules and Guidelines before entering.
